An aperture in the root of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone transmitting the optic nerve. [TFD][VHOG], The short canal through the orbitosphenoid bone at the apex of the orbit that gives passage to the optic nerve and the opthalmic artery, Foramen in the orbital region of the neurocranium for the passage of the optic nerve (cranial nerve II).[TAO]
In teleost fishes the opening is wider that in mammals. Due to the longer and deeper shape in mammals, this is usually called the optic canal; sometimes the term optic foramen may be used for the opening of the canal, but here we use this term to denote the entire space together with surrounding bone surface.
