Nephroptosis is diagnosed if the descent of the kidney is greater than 5 cm or two vertebral bodies on intravenous urogram. The kidney is capable of moving back to the normal position, which differentiates it from an ectopic kidney, which constantly remains in an abnormal position. Nephroptosis may be asymptomatic or may cause symptoms including pain and intermittent ureteric obstruction with hydronephrosis, and ischemia due to elongation, narrowing, or kinking of a renal artery.
